I started out as an accidental DBA with my local hospital managing several large enterprise MS SQL Server databases. Innovation was slow if not non-existent. After a few years getting the data infrastructure in order I moved on to other organizations working on a mix of Oracle and MS SQL databases. It was a dirty job but someone had to do it.
Eventually, I made my way to SoFi, a Silicon Valley startup. At SoFi we are all about CI/CD and moving quickly. Here my team has taken databases to the cutting edge. Using docker and kubernetes we are able to innovate and iterate quickly with our databases. Server patches and major upgrades are relatively quick and painless with near 0 interruption of service.
