At 20 years old our favorite database is old enough to vote and entering its third decade in the world of open source. It seems like a good time to look back at how we got here and break look at the trajectory we're on.
I benchmarked over 180 revisions of Postgres going back to 2001. Let's take a look at how performance has improved over time. But more interestingly let's look at how performance has become more consistent and predictable. These are the improvements that have made Postgres the production workhorse it is today.
Over that time Postgres has grown, become more complex, and developed more complete testing. Let's go back and look at how these things developed and see if our testing strategy is keeping up with the increase in code size and complexity.
