pg_top was born in 2007 from a fork of the unixtop, a terminal program displaying top processes on the system, where pg_top focuses on the processes of the PostgreSQL database you connected to. pg_proctab is a PostgreSQL extension created shortly after to allow pg_top to connect to a remote PostgreSQL databases and display operating system statistics. Recently pgstat was forked from systat to displaying other system and database statistics.
These tools have grown to help do more such as explore query execution plans and create reports on resources used per query.
