Partitioning is one of the key features for sensible management and improved performance with very large databases (VLDB). Partitioning means many different things to different people, so we need to look at particular use cases first, but then move from there to what works, what has recently improved in open source PostgreSQL in v10, v11 and v12 and what work is still needed for the future.
